The first two weeks

Ah, the joys of becoming a parent! I admit I was in a state of nesting bliss in the days following Anna's birth. It was miserable outside, but since I had no desire to leave the house (much less my pyjamas) I didn't mind one bit. Mike was in on it too. Visits from the midwife, friends and family were low-key and very welcome. We must admit that Anna was relocated from the cradle in our room to her own room before the second week was up. Who knew a newborn could make so much noise? That coupled with the new mum spidey-senses meant that I was awake many more times per night than she was.

Our first big outing was on March 23rd for a memorial service to honour my Grannie Rae. Anna missed meeting her great grandmother by only 3 weeks. The sadness of the occasion was tempered by the opportunity to welcome ARae into the family. We are quite sure that Gran's spirit lives on.

Of course, there were a lot of "firsts": first bath at home (didn't love it as much as she does now), first stroll (9 days old), and first bouts of crying (myself included)... They should hand out copies of "The Happiest Baby on the Block" when you leave the hospital. Between Mike's waltzing technique, the calming power of the sling and finally mastering the art of the swaddle, we felt we really turned the corner in this whole parenting thing when we discovered the magic of the electric toothbrush. Yes, the electric toothbrush worked wonders at creating instant calm (and we still pull it out in emergency situations 2.5 months later).
